Uterine Fibroid Embolization
The thought of needing surgery can be scary to most. We want our patients to know they are in the best care with our doctors at OBGYN Pavilion. Our specialist will inform you of the steps that will be taken before, during, and after the Uterine Fibroid Embolization procedure to provide you with the comfort of knowing what to expect.
What is Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)?
The UFE procedure is used to treat fibroids. It is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a special form of x-ray which blocks the arteries that supply blood to the fibroids and cause the fibroids to shrink.
How does the procedure work?
A thin flexible tube is inserted into the artery at the groin and small particles are injected into the tube while the x-ray pictures are taken. This blocks blood from reaching the fibroids causing them to shrink. During the procedure your heart rate, pulse, and blood pressure may be monitored. You will be connected to an IV line in order to receive sedative medication. As a result, only one small incision and zero stitches are needed for this procedure. This procedure is good for women who do not wish to become pregnant in the future or would not like to have a hysterectomy. Many women were relieved of their symptoms after the Uterine Fibroid Embolization procedure.
What to expect after the procedure?
The procedure normally takes around 90 minutes. After the procedure you will most likely stay in the hospital overnight in order to control and monitor any pain. You should return home the day after the procedure with pain medication that may be needed and detailed information of how to care for yourself at home. For several days after your surgery, you may feel pelvic cramping, nausea and a slight fever. It is common for you to experience unbalanced menstrual bleeding during the first cycling. Your symptom improvement will stabilize by the sixth month.
It may take 1 to 2 weeks to recover from surgery.
